The Well-Read Medievalist:
The Middle Ages: A Concise Encyclopedia, edited by H.R. Loyn
by Margerite von Buchholtz

This encyclopedia is chock full of incredible amounts of information about people, places and things from the Middle Ages. Of the more than 250 illustrations of Medieval objects many are ones that I at least have not found in other sources. This reference covers the period of time from 400 to 1500. It is not limited to English or even European Medieval culture, as many such books are, but also includes information about Muslim and Middle Eastern cultures.

Some of the topics covered in the over 1000 entries include chivalry, science, major battles, dynasties, artwork, architecture, biographies of key figures and the role of women. Although the information for the more general entries, such as the Crusades, seems sometimes a bit limited, it is quite remarkable considering how many different topics are covered in this book.

If you find that you would like to read more about any particular topic, at least one recommended reference book is listed at the end of almost every entry and there are many cross-references to other related entries. At the end of the book there is also a list of general reference books on the Middle Ages that are considered "especially helpful and reliable". The sources for illustrations are also provided.

The biggest problem that I have with this book is that I can not just look up a single topic. I find myself looking through the book as I find more and more interesting things to read and learn about. It is a wonderful way to while away an hour or two and dive into the ideas and achievements of the Middle Ages. It has also served as a wonderful source of answers when reading or speaking of the Middle Ages and the question comes up, What exactly was that? Or what did he do? Or…

I would highly recommend this book as an addition to any bookshelf.
